Fishing is an ancient form of procuring food for our species and has been one of the most productive as far as providing meat and essential nutrients that are much harder to procure in the same amounts on land. With that said there is one type of fishing - deep sea fishing - that has always intrigued me.
Aside the fact that deep sea fishing is kind of creepy because there's no telling what's in the ocean down there (ever seen a giant squid?), what actually interests me about deep sea fishing is that most fish from that part of the ocean have survived on different methods that the fish at the top do. That means that when we eat them we get different nutrient profiles and effectively tap into the most basic of life sources from ancient times - ocean vents.
Ocean vents are filled with nutrients and minerals. Many of these fish either survive on the vents themselves or on algae/smaller creature that are associated with these vents. By way of the food pyramid we can absorb some of these rich, clean minerals straight from the core of the earth through eating the fish from deep sea fishing catches. Interesting, huh?
